Gaza Camp in Jerash is one of the most deprived Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan. Set up in 1968 as an ‘emergency’ camp , it now has a population of 23,000.
Supervised by Shams Jordanie in collaboration with UNRWA, this pilot project supports and cares for 80 elderly people living alone or in deprived conditions. It provides them with regular hot meals and organises gatherings to break their solitude as well as social and cultural activities and outings to relieve boredom and depression. The program reinforces solidarity between generations and provides a supportive environment which is more effective in integrating and caring for the elderly.

UNRWA’s Women Program Centre, which initiated and manages the project, is at the heart of the camp. The activity room has been fully refurbished and a kitchen renovated and equipped to prepare and serve hot meals. A transportation system has been put in place to bring the beneficiaries to the Centre and return them home after the meal. those beneficiaries physically unable to come regularly to the Centre, volunteers deliver meals directly to their homes.
Shams Jordanie has secured the support of their main sponsor, Société Générale de Banque-Jordanie (SGBJ) which has financed the renovation of the Centre and has guaranteed to cover the costs of regular meals for the next two years.
Shams Jordanie also collects and distributes clothes for families in need living in the camp.

Future Project : Construction of bathing and laundry facilities to enable the elderly of Gaza Camp to wash in comfortable, hygienic and warm conditions, with the help of volunteers. Shams Jordanie will also purchase washing machines for the personal laundry needs of the beneficiaries.
Future Project : Transformation of the abandoned playground at Gaza Camp into a pleasant seating area with play equipment for kids. The area, the only play space available for the camp’s 8,000 children, has been cleared and cleaned. We now need to purchase and install play equipment and benches.
